Liver-biopsy is a procedure in which a small needle is inserted into liver to collect a tissue sample. The tissue is then analyzed in a laboratory to help the doctors in diagnosing a variety of disorders in the liver.
Preparation For The Procedure:
a) You need to inform your doctor about any lung or heart conditions, bleeding problems or allergic reactions to any medications.
b) You’ll have to stop eating for 8 hours before the procedure.
c) If necessary blood test needs to be done
d) Talk to your doctor about the procedure.
What Is To Be Done Before Biopsy?
The Doctor will explain about the biopsy procedure in detail including complications and will answer any questions that you may have.
What Is Done During Biopsy?
a) You’re will be asked to lie on your back with your right elbow out to the side and your right hand under your head.
b) An ultrasound is used to mark the location of your liver
c) You’re sedated before the procedure.
d) The Doctor will clean and numb the area on your upper abdomen with local anaesthesia. He or She will then proceed to make a small incision in your upper abdomen and insert a needle into this incision to take a small sample of liver tissue for analysis.
What Is Done After Procedure?
a) You may feel some minor pain or be sore at the biopsy site and may experience some discomfort or dull pain in your shoulder or back
b) You should not drive or operate machinery for at least 8 hours after the procedure.
c) Do not engage in a vigorous physical activity for at least 24 hours or heavy lifting up to 1 week after the biopsy.
Complications Of Liver Biopsy:
- If you experience any of these listed symptoms below within 72 of biopsy, you need to contact your doctor immediately.
- Fever
- Dizziness
- Chills
- Tenderness or redness at the site of biopsy
- Increasing abdominal pain
- Difficulty in breathing
- Chest pain
- Abdominal swelling or bloating
