HemWell Procedure
HemWell™ is an FDA-approved, nonsurgical treatment/procedure for internal hemorrhoids. It is a safe, highly effective, minimally invasive, and pain-free procedure provided by Dr Maddala, one of the leading providers of HemWell.
Depending on the individual circumstance, the treatment is typically performed in conjunction with either a colonoscopy or a more limited flexible sigmoidoscopy.
Why is this done?
Hemorrhoids usually respond to home remedies or some other treatment procedures but when they do not, it becomes extremely itchy and painful causing a lot of discomfort to the patient. Hemorrhoids in some people even start bleeding. In such cases, HemWell will be of great help.
Ideal candidates for the procedure are any patients with larger (Grade 3 or 4) hemorrhoids, or any patient with symptomatic hemorrhoids: bleeding, itching, and/or pain, regardless of the size.
How is it done?
- HemWell is a simple procedure which does not require you to get admitted to the hospital.
- HemWell is performed in a surgery center with the patient under anesthesia, typically at the end of a colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy.
- Before the procedure, you will be given anesthesia to reduce/eliminate pain during the procedure.
- After administering anesthesia, a device is used that employs a low-level, direct electrical current comparable in strength to a pacemaker.
- The electric current is administered gently and precisely to the affected hemorrhoids to reduce blood flow.
The procedure is repeated for all the hemorrhoids, and it usually takes little time.
What about the recovery?
After the HemWell procedure is performed, recovery is easy and quick. Most of the patients do not feel any discomfort following the procedure and many get back to normal activities and or work, the following day.
Since it is a non-invasive procedure, patients recover faster and are very comfortable after the procedure. Patients with HemWell also avoid risks and complications that are associated with a surgical procedure.
What are the risks?
HemWell treatment is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure, is safe, and has no reported side effects. Some risks to consider are:
- Bleeding
- Urinary Retention
- Fecal Incontinence
- Anal Stenosis
Other risks include wound infection, constipation, skin tags, recurrent hemorrhoids, and delayed hemorrhage.
